A textured, abstract composition by Horia Damian, featuring deep purple tones and metallic accents that evoke the form of a sacred space.
Horia Damian, a Romanian artist who spent much of his career in Paris, developed a distinct visual language that moved between geometric precision and raw, gestural abstraction. This work, titled 'Comme un tapis de prière' (Like a Prayer Rug), reflects his interest in the intersection of spiritual symbolism and material texture. The composition centres on a structured, arch-like form that suggests a threshold or a sacred space, echoing the traditional shape of a prayer rug while stripping away literal representation. The application of paint is heavy and tactile. Damian uses thick impasto to build a surface that catches the light, creating a physical presence that demands attention. The palette is dominated by muted, earthy purples and deep mauves, punctuated by flashes of gold leaf or metallic pigment. These golden accents provide a sense of illumination, drawing the eye toward the centre of the work where the brushwork becomes more chaotic and energetic. The surrounding areas are treated with sweeping, rhythmic strokes that frame the central motif, suggesting a sense of enclosure or sanctuary. Damian's practice often involved a dialogue with architectural forms and ancient monuments. In this piece, the reference to a prayer rug serves as a conceptual anchor, grounding the abstract marks in a recognisable cultural object. The tension between the rigid, architectural frame and the fluid, expressive interior creates a dynamic balance. The viewer is invited to observe the interplay of light and shadow across the textured surface, where the physical act of painting remains visible in every mark. This work demonstrates Damian's ability to imbue abstract forms with a sense of ritual and history, moving beyond simple decoration to explore the weight of human experience through colour and form.
