The scene illustrates the struggle between the forces of desire and the virtues of purity. In the foreground, figures representing Chastity, including Minerva and Diana, engage in a skirmish against the followers of Venus and Cupid. The composition is organised with a clear division between the active, crowded foreground and the expansive, serene background.

Perugino employs a characteristic Umbrian approach to the setting. The figures are placed within a wide, open space that recedes towards distant hills and a pale, luminous sky. This treatment of space creates a sense of calm that contrasts with the narrative tension of the central conflict. The artist uses a palette of soft, muted tones, allowing the individual figures to stand out against the grassy plain. Small, delicate trees punctuate the composition, a recurring motif in Perugino's work that helps to define the depth of the field.

The iconography is derived from classical literature, specifically the writings of Ovid and Petrarch. The presence of various deities and mythological creatures serves to populate the scene with symbolic meaning.
