Pavel Filonov, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, developed a unique methodology he termed Analytical Art. This approach sought to represent the internal structure of objects and social phenomena through a process of organic growth, where each brushstroke acts as a cell within a larger, complex organism. Colonial Policy, painted in 1912, demonstrates this philosophy through a dense, fragmented composition that rejects traditional perspective in favour of a multi-layered, kaleidoscopic view of human interaction. The canvas is crowded with figures and symbolic motifs, reflecting the chaotic and often violent nature of imperial expansion. Filonov employs a technique of meticulous, small-scale mark-making, building the image from countless individual units. This creates a sense of constant motion and tension across the surface. The figures appear intertwined with their environment, suggesting a critique of the dehumanising effects of colonial structures.
