A woodblock print from the Collection of Flower Brocades by Utagawa Yoshitora, depicting travellers on the Tōkaidō road with accompanying comic verse.
This woodblock print originates from the Kinkashū, or Collection of Flower Brocades, a series associated with the artist Utagawa Yoshitora. The work captures a scene of travellers along the Tōkaidō, the historic road connecting Edo and Kyoto. Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was active during the mid-nineteenth century and produced numerous works documenting the customs and geography of Japan.
The composition is divided across two pages, presenting a narrative blend of topography and social observation. In the upper sections, the artist depicts mountainous terrain and architectural elements, including a bridge spanning a river. These geographical markers provide context for the journey. Below, groups of figures are shown in various states of movement and interaction. The figures wear traditional garments, their postures suggesting the casual nature of travel. The inclusion of kyōka, or comic verse, integrates literary elements into the visual field, a common practice in Edo-period publications where text and image functioned as a unified whole.
The print employs a restrained colour palette, typical of the period's book illustrations. The lines are precise, defining the contours of the figures and the structural elements of the environment. The spatial arrangement is relatively flat, prioritising clarity of information over atmospheric perspective. This work offers a glimpse into the social fabric of the era, documenting the intersection of travel, literature, and daily life. It serves as an example of the collaborative nature of woodblock production, where artists, writers, and carvers contributed to the final output. The print remains a record of the aesthetic and cultural priorities of the late Edo period, reflecting the interest in travel narratives and the popularisation of poetry among the urban population.
