A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Flemish artist Hieronymus Wierix, portraying Claudio Acquaviva, the fifth Superior General of the Society of Jesus.
This engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicts Claudio Acquaviva, the fifth Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Wierix, a member of a prominent family of Antwerp engravers, was known for his technical precision and his ability to render fine detail within the constraints of the copper plate. The portrait captures Acquaviva in his later years, wearing the traditional Jesuit habit and biretta. He holds a book, a common iconographic element in clerical portraiture of the period, signifying his role as an intellectual leader and administrator of the order.
The composition is formal and restrained. Wierix employs a system of hatching and cross-hatching to model the facial features and the folds of the fabric, creating a sense of volume and texture. The background remains simple, ensuring the focus stays on the subject. The Latin inscription at the base provides historical context, identifying the sitter and noting his tenure as the head of the Jesuits, as well as his death in 1615 at the age of 74. This type of print was often produced for circulation among the religious community, serving as a commemorative image of a significant figure in Counter-Reformation history.
Technically, the work demonstrates the high standard of Flemish engraving during the early seventeenth century. Wierix manages to convey a sense of individual character through the subtle lines around the eyes and mouth, avoiding the stiffness often found in contemporary portraiture. The clarity of the lettering and the balance of the composition reflect the disciplined approach of the Wierix workshop. This print offers a clear view into the visual culture of the Jesuit order and the methods of print production in Antwerp, a major centre for the European print trade at the time.
