A minimalist graphic illustration of two circus horses by Dutch artist Dick Bruna, featuring bold outlines and a primary colour palette.
This work by Dutch artist and illustrator Dick Bruna displays the characteristic visual language that defined his career. Bruna, known for his disciplined approach to form and colour, utilised a restricted palette and bold, black outlines to communicate subjects with immediate clarity. In this piece, two circus horses are depicted in a frontal, symmetrical arrangement against a flat, cobalt blue background. The horses are simplified into essential shapes, with their bridles adorned by yellow floral motifs and red horizontal bands.
Bruna often worked with a limited set of primary colours, specifically red, yellow, and blue, alongside black and white. This choice reflects his interest in the De Stijl movement, which prioritised geometric abstraction and purity of colour. By reducing the horses to their most basic components, Bruna creates an image that is both playful and highly structured. The thick, uniform black lines act as a container for the flat fields of colour, ensuring that the composition remains legible and balanced.
This illustration originates from his work on circus-themed publications, where he applied his minimalist aesthetic to subjects that typically invite complex detail. Instead of attempting to capture the motion or texture of the animals, Bruna focuses on the graphic potential of their forms. The result is an image that functions as a signifier, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation. The repetition of the two horse heads creates a rhythmic quality, typical of his page layouts where visual consistency was paramount. This print offers a clear example of how Bruna applied principles of graphic design to the medium of children's illustration, maintaining a rigorous standard of simplicity throughout his body of work.
