This image depicts a fragment of the extensive fresco cycle painted by Jerg Ratgeb for the Karmeliterkloster in Frankfurt am Main. Executed between 1513 and 1517, these works represent a significant example of German Renaissance mural painting. The scene captures the Circumcision of Christ, a subject rendered with the characteristic intensity and expressive distortion associated with Ratgeb's hand.

Ratgeb, a painter whose life ended in political turmoil, utilised a palette of muted earth tones, ochres, and deep reds to define the figures. The composition is crowded, with figures pressing into the foreground space, creating a sense of urgency and physical proximity. The architectural elements are suggested rather than fully realised, allowing the focus to remain on the central interaction between the figures and the infant. The drapery is heavy and angular, reflecting the stylistic conventions of the period in Southern Germany.

Unlike the balanced compositions of his Italian contemporaries, Ratgeb favoured a more agitated, emotive approach. His figures possess distinct, individualised features, often bordering on the grotesque, which adds to the raw, human quality of the narrative. The fresco cycle, which once adorned the cloister walls, suffered damage over the centuries, yet the surviving portions provide insight into the artist's technical approach to large-scale wall painting. The application of pigment shows a mastery of the fresco technique, with subtle gradations of colour used to model the forms of the participants. This print captures the weathered texture of the original plaster, preserving the historical character of the work as it exists today within the museum collection.
