An Art Nouveau illustration by Raphael Kirchner from the Les Cigarettes du Monde series, depicting a woman in a white gown seated on a red chair.
Raphael Kirchner was an Austrian artist who became a leading figure in the postcard industry during the Belle Époque. He moved to Paris in 1900, where his work gained popularity for its depiction of the Kirchner Girl. This archetype was a precursor to the pin-up, characterised by a blend of innocence and flirtation. This specific illustration belongs to a series titled Les Cigarettes du Monde, which explored the theme of women smoking, a subject that carried connotations of modernity and independence at the turn of the century. The composition features a woman seated in a red spindle-back chair. She wears a white off-the-shoulder gown with a small heart detail at the neckline. Her hair is styled in a soft, voluminous fashion typical of the period, adorned with a red flower that coordinates with the chair. The background is a neutral, textured grey, allowing the figure to remain the primary subject. To the right, a vertical green panel contains the series title in a stylised Art Nouveau typeface. Handwritten script is visible on this panel, adding a personal element to the printed work. Kirchner used soft, blended tones to create a sense of atmosphere. The use of lithography allowed for subtle gradations in the skin tones and the fabric of the dress. The red chair provides a sharp contrast against the otherwise muted palette. This work is representative of the transition from traditional portraiture to commercial illustration, where the focus shifted towards idealised feminine beauty for a mass-market audience.
