A precise architectural study of the Romanesque Church of Lery in Normandy, rendered in graphite and sepia wash by John Sell Cotman in 1817.
This architectural study by John Sell Cotman captures the Romanesque structure of the Church of Lery, situated near Pont-de-l'Arche in Normandy. Executed in 1817, the work reflects the artist's meticulous approach to topographical recording during his travels through Northern France. Cotman, a member of the Norwich School of painters, possessed a distinct ability to simplify complex masonry into clear, geometric forms while maintaining a sense of structural integrity.
The composition focuses on the south-east elevation of the church. Cotman employs a restrained palette, relying primarily on graphite outlines and subtle sepia washes to define the massing of the central tower and the surrounding nave. The drawing demonstrates his characteristic economy of line, where minimal marks suggest the texture of stone and the weight of the building against the sky. The foreground remains largely suggested, allowing the viewer to focus on the rhythmic repetition of the blind arcading along the tower and the solid, grounded presence of the apse.
Unlike the more atmospheric or dramatic works of his contemporaries, this piece prioritises clarity and precision. It functions as a record of historical architecture, documenting the specific features of the Norman building with academic rigour. The inclusion of the date and location in the lower margin confirms its status as a field study, likely intended for later reference or inclusion in a larger series of etchings. The work provides a clear view of Cotman's technical process, showing how he balanced the requirements of accurate documentation with his own aesthetic sensibilities regarding light and shadow. The resulting image is a quiet, disciplined observation of European heritage, presented with the technical proficiency expected of a master draughtsman.
