A refined Edo period kacho-ga study by Ito Jakuchu, featuring detailed chrysanthemums and dark rock formations set against a flowing stream.
This work by Ito Jakuchu belongs to the genre of kacho-ga, or bird-and-flower painting, a tradition that occupied a significant place in Japanese art. Jakuchu, a merchant-turned-painter from Kyoto, developed a distinct approach to natural subjects. He often combined meticulous observation with a decorative sensibility that departed from the more restrained ink-wash traditions of his contemporaries.
The composition features large, spherical chrysanthemum blooms rendered with precision. These flowers are positioned alongside jagged, dark rock formations that anchor the lower portion of the frame. A stream curves through the background, providing a sense of movement and spatial depth. The colour palette is deliberate, using muted earth tones for the background to allow the white, pink, and orange petals of the chrysanthemums to emerge. The rocks are painted with deep, saturated tones, creating a visual contrast with the delicate floral elements.
Jakuchu was known for his eccentric style and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through careful study. This piece reflects his interest in the natural world, filtered through a highly refined aesthetic. The arrangement of the branches and the placement of the birds demonstrate a balance between organic growth and formal design. The silk support provides a subtle texture that softens the application of pigment, contributing to the overall atmospheric quality of the image. This print captures the technical skill Jakuchu applied to his larger series, such as the famous 'Doshoku Sai-e' (Colourful Realm of Living Beings), where he explored the natural world with unparalleled attention to detail and composition.
