A detailed Flemish engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicting the Christ Child performing domestic chores alongside the Virgin Mary and angels.
This engraving by the Flemish master Hieronymus Wierix depicts a domestic scene involving the Holy Family and attendant angels. The composition presents the Christ Child engaged in the humble task of sweeping the floor, while the Virgin Mary tends to a cooking pot over an open hearth. Angels assist with various chores, including gathering wood and preparing food, transforming the setting into a workshop of divine service. The scene is rendered with the technical precision characteristic of the Wierix family, who were prolific engravers in Antwerp during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
The interior is filled with everyday objects, such as plates, jugs, and a mallet, which ground the spiritual subject in a recognisable, tangible reality. The use of cross-hatching and fine line work creates a sense of depth within the small room, while the light emanating from the hearth provides a source of focus for the figures. Latin inscriptions at the base of the print offer a theological commentary on the image, linking the physical labour of the Christ Child to his broader role in the cosmos. The work reflects the Counter-Reformation interest in humanising religious figures, presenting them in relatable, domestic environments to encourage personal piety among the faithful.
Hieronymus Wierix was part of a significant dynasty of printmakers. His output was vast, covering religious, mythological, and portrait subjects. This particular print demonstrates his ability to combine narrative detail with a disciplined graphic style. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the figures show the influence of contemporary Flemish art, where the focus remained on the careful observation of form and texture. The print is a fine example of the devotional imagery produced in the Low Countries during this period, intended for private contemplation and collection.
