A detailed Northern Renaissance painting by Cornelis Engebrechtsz. depicting the emotional farewell between Christ and the Virgin Mary.
Cornelis Engebrechtsz. was a leading figure in the Leiden school of painting during the early sixteenth century. This work depicts the emotional moment of Christ bidding farewell to the Virgin Mary before his journey to Jerusalem. The composition is characteristic of the Northern Renaissance, combining precise, descriptive detail with a narrative focus on human emotion.
In the centre, Christ leans forward to embrace his mother, who is draped in a deep blue mantle. Their interaction is surrounded by a group of figures, including the disciples and weeping women, whose expressions convey grief and resignation. Engebrechtsz. employs a palette of saturated reds, greens, and blues, which contrast against the lighter, atmospheric tones of the background. The background itself features a detailed cityscape with architectural elements typical of the period, including a bridge and distant fortifications, which provide a sense of depth and scale to the scene.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the artist's skill in rendering textures, from the heavy folds of the garments to the subtle play of light on the figures. The inclusion of a small dog in the foreground adds a touch of domestic realism, a common feature in Netherlandish art of this era. The work reflects the period's interest in humanising biblical narratives, moving away from rigid iconographic traditions toward a more empathetic portrayal of sacred events. The figures are arranged in a manner that guides the viewer's eye through the emotional core of the scene, while the expansive landscape provides a quiet, expansive counterpoint to the intimate drama occurring in the foreground.
