A 1630 ink and wash drawing by Jan Symonsz Pynas, depicting Christ in prayer on the Mount of Olives.
This drawing by Jan Symonsz Pynas depicts the Agony in the Garden, a subject frequently explored by artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Dated 1630, the work demonstrates the artist's command of ink and wash techniques. Pynas uses a delicate pen line to define the figure of Christ, who kneels in prayer amidst a sparse, rocky setting. The application of brown wash creates a sense of volume in the drapery of the robes, while simultaneously suggesting the dim, atmospheric conditions of the night scene.
As a member of the Pre-Rembrandtists, Pynas was influenced by the Italianate style, particularly the work of Adam Elsheimer. This influence is visible in the composition, which balances the central figure against the rugged terrain and the distant, faintly sketched architecture of Jerusalem. The focus remains on the internal state of the subject, conveyed through the posture and the upward gaze. The drawing avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the emotional weight of the moment. The inclusion of the signature and date in the lower left corner confirms its status as a finished work rather than a preliminary sketch. This piece offers a clear example of the technical precision and thematic focus characteristic of Pynas's later career, shortly before his death in 1631. The monochromatic palette, achieved through varying densities of wash, provides a quiet, contemplative quality suitable for study or display in a private collection.
