A narrative religious scene by Lorenzo Lotto, depicting the journey of Christ and his apostles toward the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor.
This work by Lorenzo Lotto depicts a narrative sequence from the New Testament, specifically the events surrounding the Transfiguration. The composition is divided into two distinct zones, reflecting the journey of Christ and his disciples toward the summit of Mount Tabor. On the left, Christ leads a group of apostles across a grassy foreground, their movements captured with a sense of purposeful motion. Their garments, rendered in shades of rose, blue, and ochre, provide a chromatic link to the figures positioned on the hill to the right.
On the elevated ground, the scene shifts to the moment of the Transfiguration itself. Christ appears in a radiant state, accompanied by figures representing the prophets, while the remaining disciples react with gestures of awe and reverence. Lotto employs a soft, atmospheric treatment of the background, where the rolling hills recede into a hazy, pale blue horizon. This technique creates a sense of spatial depth, drawing the eye from the immediate foreground toward the distant, ethereal summit.
Lotto was active during the High Renaissance, a period defined by the pursuit of balance and naturalistic representation. His approach here demonstrates an interest in human emotion and the physical interaction between figures. The lighting is consistent across the panel, casting gentle shadows that define the forms of the drapery and the contours of the landscape. The painting functions as a visual narrative, guiding the viewer through the progression of the biblical account. The attention to detail in the foliage and the varied postures of the apostles demonstrate the technical precision typical of Lotto's work during this phase of his career. This piece remains a clear example of the Venetian influence on his style, particularly in the handling of colour and the soft integration of figures into the natural environment.
