A Sienese School tempera and gold leaf panel painting depicting Christ in a traditional pose of blessing, attributed to Segna di Buonaventura.
This panel painting by Segna di Buonaventura depicts Christ in a frontal, half-length pose, a composition typical of the Sienese tradition during the early fourteenth century. The figure holds a book in his left hand while his right hand is raised in a gesture of benediction. The artist employs the traditional iconography of the period, balancing the solemnity of the subject with the decorative qualities inherent in Sienese painting.
The work features a gold-leaf background, which serves to flatten the pictorial space and direct the viewer's attention to the central figure. The halo, incised with patterns, adds a layer of texture to the gilded surface. Christ is dressed in a dark tunic with fine, linear gold highlights, draped with a red mantle that provides a strong chromatic contrast. The facial features are rendered with a degree of softness, reflecting the influence of Duccio di Buoninsegna, under whom Segna likely trained.
Segna di Buonaventura was a prominent figure in the Sienese art scene, active during the first three decades of the fourteenth century. His work is characterised by a clear adherence to the stylistic conventions of his master, Duccio, while maintaining a distinct approach to line and colour. This panel is a representative example of the devotional art produced for private or ecclesiastical use during this era. The preservation of the gold leaf and the pigments allows for an observation of the technical methods employed by Sienese workshops, including the use of tempera to achieve subtle transitions in the flesh tones and the application of gold to signify the divine nature of the subject. The pointed arch shape of the panel suggests it was originally part of a larger polyptych or a dedicated devotional frame.
