A precise 1519 engraving by Hans Sebald Beham, depicting a devotional encounter between Christ and the Virgin Mary through fine cross-hatching.
This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham, dated 1519, displays the technical precision characteristic of the Little Masters, a group of German printmakers who followed the tradition of Albrecht Dürer. The work depicts a moment of quiet interaction between Christ, wearing the crown of thorns, and the Virgin Mary. Beham employs a rigorous system of cross-hatching to define the musculature of Christ and the folds of the Virgin's garments, creating a sense of volume within a compact frame.
The composition is structured around the exchange of glances and gestures. Christ is shown from the back, his torso turned towards the viewer, while the Virgin is positioned in profile, her expression conveying a sense of sorrow. The radiant halo surrounding Christ is rendered with fine, radiating lines that draw the eye toward the centre of the image. This use of light, combined with the stark contrast between the figures and the background, provides a clear focus on the emotional weight of the scene.
Beham was a member of the Nuremberg school, and his work often reflects the influence of contemporary Italian prints, particularly in the treatment of the human form. The small scale of this engraving is typical of the period, designed for close inspection by collectors and scholars. The lines are clean and deliberate, demonstrating the artist's control over the burin. This print is a representative example of the devotional imagery produced in early sixteenth-century Germany, where the technical mastery of the engraving medium was applied to traditional theological subjects. The work remains a clear record of the stylistic transition occurring in German art during this era, balancing traditional iconography with an increasing interest in anatomical accuracy and spatial depth.
