Christ and the Adulteress - Lucas Cranach the Younger

A classic Northern Renaissance depiction of a biblical narrative, featuring the characteristic style of the Cranach workshop.

This work depicts the biblical narrative of Christ and the woman taken in adultery, a subject frequently explored by the Cranach workshop during the sixteenth century. The composition centres on Christ, who is shown in a calm, authoritative posture, gesturing towards the crowd. To his right, the accused woman is held by figures in contemporary sixteenth-century armour, reflecting the workshop practice of placing biblical figures within the visual context of the Reformation era. The surrounding crowd consists of varied male figures, many with exaggerated facial features and beards, which is a stylistic hallmark of the Cranach school.

The painting features a dark, neutral background that pushes the figures into the foreground, creating a compressed sense of space. The inscription at the top, taken from the Gospel of John, provides the moral framework for the scene: 'Wer unter euch ohn Sünde ist, der werfe den ersten Stein auf sie' (He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her). The use of colour is deliberate, with the bright red of Christ's mantle and the woman's dress providing a visual link between the two primary figures, contrasting against the muted steel tones of the armour and the dark garments of the accusers.

Lucas Cranach the Younger took over the family workshop in Wittenberg following his father's death. His output maintained the stylistic conventions established by Lucas Cranach the Elder, including the focus on clear, didactic storytelling and the use of specific, recurring facial types. This piece functions as a moralising narrative, common in Protestant art of the period, designed to communicate theological concepts through accessible, humanised imagery. The attention to the texture of the metal armour and the fine details of the clothing demonstrates the technical proficiency expected of a major German workshop during this period.
