Description
A study in tonal restraint and structural form by Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe, featuring a still life arrangement of a jug, plate, and meat.
Samuel Peploe, a member of the Scottish Colourists, produced this still life during a period of intense focus on formal structure and tonal relationships. The composition features a simple arrangement of everyday objects: a ceramic jug, a plate, and raw meat, set against a draped background. Peploe avoids excessive detail, choosing instead to define the forms through broad, confident brushwork and a restricted, muted palette. The work demonstrates his interest in the physical properties of paint and the way light interacts with surfaces. Unlike his later, more brightly coloured works, this piece relies on subtle shifts in tone to create volume and space. The grey and mauve hues dominate the scene, providing a unified atmosphere that binds the disparate elements together. The placement of the knife and the folds of the cloth guide the viewer's eye across the table, creating a sense of balance within the frame. Peploe's approach to the subject is analytical, prioritising the arrangement of shapes and the weight of the objects over a literal representation of the scene. The paint application is deliberate, with visible strokes that reveal the artist's process. This work reflects the influence of French modernism on Peploe's practice, particularly his engagement with the works of Cézanne, whose influence is evident in the structural integrity of the objects and the flattened perspective of the tabletop. It is a study in restraint, showing how a mundane subject can be transformed through careful observation and a disciplined approach to colour and form.
