Albert Bierstadt, a German-born American painter, is known for his expansive depictions of the American West. This work captures the sheer scale of Yosemite Valley, focusing on the waterfall known as Cho-looke. The composition employs a classic Hudson River School approach, balancing the monumental geological features with human presence in the foreground.

The painting uses light to guide the viewer through the scene. The upper reaches of the granite cliffs are bathed in a golden, atmospheric glow, which contrasts with the shadowed, cooler tones of the foreground and the gathering clouds above. The waterfall itself acts as a vertical axis, drawing the eye from the high peaks down to the valley floor. Bierstadt uses precise brushwork to render the textures of the rock face, the foliage of the trees, and the mist generated by the falling water.

In the lower section, a small group of figures gathers around a campfire. This inclusion provides a sense of scale, emphasising the vastness of the natural environment. Bierstadt travelled to the Yosemite region in 1863, and this work is a product of the sketches and studies he produced during that expedition.
