A six-panel folding screen featuring masterful ink calligraphy by the Edo period artist Mitsui Shinna.
This six-panel folding screen, or byobu, features the masterful calligraphy of Mitsui Shinna, a prominent Japanese calligrapher of the mid-Edo period. Shinna was known for his command of various scripts, often drawing inspiration from Chinese literary traditions. The work displays a sophisticated interplay between different calligraphic styles, ranging from the bold, thick strokes of the larger characters to the fluid, cursive movements of the smaller columns of text.
The composition is balanced across the six panels, creating a rhythmic visual experience that mirrors the cadence of the poetry itself. The ink application varies in density, providing a sense of depth and texture against the neutral paper background. Each panel is punctuated by red seals, which serve as both a mark of authenticity and a visual counterpoint to the monochrome ink. The screen format allows the text to occupy physical space, transforming the act of reading into an immersive encounter with the artist's hand.
Shinna's work reflects the high value placed on Chinese classical literature within the intellectual circles of eighteenth-century Japan. By transcribing these poems, the artist engages with a long tradition of scholarly practice, where the aesthetic quality of the brushwork is as significant as the meaning of the written word. The screen is framed by a subtle, patterned border, which contains the composition without distracting from the central calligraphic forms. This piece offers a clear example of the technical precision and expressive freedom characteristic of Shinna's later career. It remains a study in the balance of form, space, and movement, demonstrating the capacity of ink and brush to convey both literary content and personal artistic temperament.
