A refined example of Zen calligraphy by the monk Duzhan Xingying, featuring a poem written in fluid, expressive ink strokes to mark a sixtieth birthday.
This work is a fine example of Zen calligraphy, executed by the monk Duzhan Xingying. Duzhan, a Chinese Chan master, travelled to Japan during the Edo period, where he became a figure within the Ōbaku school of Zen Buddhism. His brushwork reflects the training and aesthetic values of the Ming dynasty literati, combined with the direct, spontaneous expression associated with Zen practice.
The scroll features a poem composed to mark the sixtieth birthday of a senior monk. In East Asian traditions, the completion of a sixty-year cycle is a significant milestone, representing the full rotation of the sexagenary cycle. The characters are written in a fluid, cursive script. The ink density varies across the paper, showing the speed and pressure of the brush as it moves across the surface. The composition is vertical, typical of hanging scrolls intended for display in a tokonoma, or alcove, within a temple or private residence.
Zen calligraphy is not merely a decorative art form. It is a record of the physical and mental state of the practitioner at the moment of creation. The balance between the empty space and the dark ink creates a sense of rhythm. The seals at the bottom provide authentication and context, linking the piece to the specific lineage of the artist. This print captures the texture of the original ink on paper, preserving the nuances of the brush strokes. It is a piece that invites quiet contemplation, suitable for spaces where clarity and simplicity are valued.
