A delicate fan-shaped painting by Kano Motonobu depicting children at play, rendered in ink and colour on a gold-leaf background.
This work, attributed to Kano Motonobu, depicts a group of children engaged in various activities. The composition is executed on a fan-shaped format, a common medium for the Kano school during the Muromachi period. The figures are rendered with the characteristic precision of the school, which combined Chinese-influenced ink wash techniques with the decorative sensibilities of Japanese court art.
The scene features five boys in traditional attire, interacting in a relaxed setting. The use of gold leaf as a background provides a luminous surface, which contrasts with the muted, earthy tones of the figures' clothing. Motonobu was instrumental in establishing the Kano school as a dominant force in Japanese painting, and his ability to balance narrative detail with formal composition is evident here. The boys are shown in various postures, suggesting a sense of movement and spontaneity, while the surrounding gold surface maintains a sense of order and refinement.
Kano Motonobu was the son of Kano Masanobu and is credited with consolidating the style that would define the school for generations. His work often drew upon Chinese themes, such as the 'karako' or Chinese children motif, which was popular in Japanese art for its associations with auspiciousness and vitality. The fan shape itself necessitates a careful arrangement of figures to ensure the composition remains balanced across the curved surface. This print captures the delicate brushwork and the subtle colour palette typical of the period, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the sixteenth-century Japanese elite. The work is a fine example of the technical mastery and stylistic synthesis that defined the Kano school's approach to both secular and religious subject matter.
