A detailed 1870 oil painting by John Everett Millais, capturing the quiet, autumnal atmosphere of the River Tay in Scotland.
Chill October, painted in 1870, marks a shift in the career of John Everett Millais. Moving away from the narrative subjects of his early Pre-Raphaelite period, Millais turned his attention to the natural world. The work depicts the banks of the River Tay near Perth, Scotland. Millais spent significant time in this region, and the painting captures the specific atmosphere of an autumn day. The composition is dominated by the reeds in the foreground, rendered with precise attention to individual stalks. Beyond the reeds, the water reflects the muted light of an overcast sky. A cluster of trees stands on the bank, their branches leaning under the influence of a breeze. The palette is restrained, relying on ochre, brown, and grey tones to convey the cooling temperatures of the season. Millais painted this work directly from nature, a practice he adopted during his later years. The lack of human figures allows the viewer to focus entirely on the environmental conditions. The birds in the distance add a sense of scale and movement to the otherwise still scene. This painting is often cited as the first of his major pure landscapes, demonstrating his technical ability to translate the textures of grass, water, and bark into paint. It remains a notable example of Victorian naturalism, reflecting the artist's observation of the Scottish countryside.
