Kimbei, a former assistant to Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried, operated a successful studio in Yokohama. His work catered to the growing international interest in Japanese culture, often employing local artists to apply watercolours to black-and-white photographs by hand.

The composition draws the eye along the narrow waterway, flanked by grassy banks where figures gather to observe the blossoms. A large, gnarled cherry tree dominates the foreground, its branches extending across the frame to provide a natural canopy.
