A screenprint by Edward Ruscha featuring his iconic Standard petrol station, reimagined with a surreal, floating olive.
Edward Ruscha is recognised for his examination of American vernacular culture, particularly the roadside architecture of the Western United States. This work, Cheese Mold Standard with Olive, belongs to his series of screenprints depicting the Standard Oil petrol station. The composition utilises a dramatic, low-angle perspective that stretches the architecture across the frame, creating a sense of vastness typical of the Californian landscape.
The imagery is stripped of extraneous detail, focusing instead on the geometric forms of the station canopy and the iconic signage. Ruscha employs a muted, almost desaturated colour palette, which contrasts with the sharp, clean lines of the structure. The inclusion of the olive, a surreal and incongruous element, disrupts the clinical precision of the scene. This juxtaposition is characteristic of Ruscha's approach, where he blends the mundane reality of commercial infrastructure with unexpected, often humorous, visual interventions.
Technically, the print demonstrates the artist's mastery of the screenprinting medium. The flat areas of colour and the precise registration of the layers reflect the aesthetic of commercial advertising, yet the final result remains firmly within the realm of fine art. By isolating the petrol station from its surroundings, Ruscha invites the viewer to consider the object as a formal arrangement of shapes and shadows rather than merely a functional building. The work captures a specific moment in the mid-twentieth century, documenting the ubiquity of the American road trip while simultaneously subverting the viewer's expectations through the introduction of the singular, floating olive.
