A detailed portrait miniature of King Charles I by John Hoskins, capturing the monarch in the distinctive style of the seventeenth-century Stuart court.
This portrait miniature depicts King Charles I of England, rendered with the technical precision characteristic of John Hoskins. Hoskins, a prominent miniaturist during the early seventeenth century, served the Stuart court and produced numerous likenesses of the royal family. The work displays the monarch in his mature years, featuring his signature moustache and pointed beard, framed by a wide lace collar.
The artist employs a delicate application of watercolour on vellum, a medium that requires immense control and patience. The blue sash, worn across the dark doublet, provides a sharp chromatic contrast against the muted background tones. Hoskins captures the subtle textures of the lace and the sheen of the fabric through fine, layered brushwork. The oval format is typical of the period, designed to be held in the hand or worn as a personal token.
This piece reflects the aesthetic preferences of the Caroline court, where portraiture functioned as a tool for political identity and personal devotion. The sitter is presented with a direct gaze, conveying a sense of authority despite the intimate scale of the object. The signature 'IH' is visible on the left side, confirming the attribution to Hoskins. As a master of the miniature form, Hoskins influenced the subsequent generation of artists, including his nephew Samuel Cooper. This print captures the fine detail of the original vellum surface, allowing for a close examination of the artist's technique and the historical fashion of the 1630s.
