A nineteenth-century lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet depicting a group of figures in traditional Neapolitan dress.
Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, a draughtsman and lithographer of the French Romantic period, produced this work during a time when European interest in Italian folk culture was widespread. The lithograph depicts a group of figures in traditional Neapolitan attire, captured in a moment of communal performance. Raffet employs a delicate yet precise line to define the textures of the clothing and the expressive postures of the individuals, who appear to be engaged in song or dance. The composition is centred, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the central male figure and his companions, while the background remains loosely sketched to maintain focus on the primary subjects.
As a master of the lithographic medium, Raffet utilised the tonal possibilities of the stone to create depth without relying on heavy shading. The figures are rendered with a sense of movement, reflecting the artist's ability to capture transient scenes of daily life. This print demonstrates the technical skill required in nineteenth-century commercial lithography, where the artist worked closely with the printer to achieve a balance between fine detail and atmospheric effect. The inclusion of the title in the lower margin is characteristic of the period's print culture, where such works were often distributed as part of larger collections or albums documenting regional customs and costumes. The work provides a window into the artistic fascination with the Mediterranean, a common theme among French artists who travelled south in search of picturesque subjects. The paper shows the characteristic ageing of a nineteenth-century print, with the original plate marks and publisher details still visible, confirming its provenance as an authentic historical impression.
