A precise Neoclassical etching by Franz Xaver Habermann depicting three elegant table candlestick designs with fluted shafts and laurel motifs.
This etching by Franz Xaver Habermann presents a precise study of three distinct table candlesticks. Habermann, a German engraver and architect, produced numerous series of designs for furniture and interior elements during the eighteenth century. His work reflects the shift in European taste towards the Neoclassical style, which drew inspiration from the classical forms of antiquity.
The composition is organised with technical clarity. The central candlestick dominates the frame, displaying a tapered, fluted shaft adorned with swags of laurel and a central rosette. To the left and right, two smaller variations are depicted, each demonstrating different approaches to the base and stem. The left design features a fluted column rising from a wide, leaf-decorated base, while the right design incorporates a more slender profile with delicate festoons. The use of fine, parallel lines creates a sense of volume and texture, allowing the viewer to perceive the metallic quality of the objects.
Habermann was known for his ability to translate complex architectural and decorative concepts into accessible prints. These designs were often used by craftsmen and patrons to inform the production of high-quality metalwork. The inclusion of the French title, Chandeliers de table, and the German labels, Taffel-Leuchter, indicates the international reach of his publications. The print avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the structural integrity and proportion of the objects. It provides a clear record of the aesthetic preferences of the period, where symmetry and classical motifs defined the domestic interior. The work remains a valuable reference for those interested in the history of decorative arts and the dissemination of design patterns in the eighteenth century.
