A fine example of Nasta'liq calligraphy by the master Mir Emad Hassani, featuring diagonal lines of text set within an illuminated floral border.
This piece displays the mastery of Mir Emad Hassani, a figure widely regarded as the most accomplished practitioner of the Nasta'liq script. The work is a classic example of a chalipa, a format involving diagonal lines of text arranged within a rectangular frame. The script exhibits the balance, proportion, and fluid motion that define the Safavid period of Persian art. Each letterform demonstrates a precise control of the reed pen, resulting in the characteristic variation between thick and thin strokes that gives Nasta'liq its rhythmic quality.
The central text is set against a background of delicate gold illumination, which provides a subtle contrast to the dark ink. The surrounding border features a floral motif, common in the decorative arts of the era, which frames the calligraphy without distracting from the written word. The composition relies on the interplay between the diagonal orientation of the lines and the verticality of the page, creating a sense of movement within a static space.
Mir Emad Hassani lived during the reign of Shah Abbas I, a time when the arts flourished in the Safavid capital of Isfahan. His influence on subsequent generations of calligraphers is immense, as his style became the standard for beauty and technical accuracy in the Persian-speaking world. This print captures the physical texture of the original manuscript, including the subtle ageing of the paper and the metallic sheen of the gold leaf. It offers an opportunity to observe the technical rigour required to produce such refined script. The work functions as both a literary record and a visual object, where the aesthetic form of the letters carries as much weight as the poetic content they convey.
