An allegorical depiction of Summer by Antoine Watteau, featuring the goddess Ceres with symbols of the harvest and the zodiac.
Antoine Watteau, a master of the French Rococo, painted this allegorical representation of Summer as part of a series depicting the four seasons. The work features Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, seated amidst clouds. She wears a crown of wheat and poppies, symbols of the harvest and the fertility of the earth. Beside her, a putto holds a sickle, ready to reap the golden grain that frames the composition.
The painting exhibits the characteristic lightness and fluid brushwork associated with Watteau. The palette consists of soft, atmospheric tones, with golden yellows and pale pinks contrasting against the cool blues of the sky. A lion, often associated with the sun and the heat of the summer months, rests at the feet of the goddess. Below, a crayfish is visible, representing the zodiac sign of Cancer, which corresponds to the summer solstice.
Watteau moved away from the rigid classicism of the previous century, opting for a more lyrical and decorative approach. This piece demonstrates his ability to blend mythological themes with a sense of gentle, human grace. The oval format, common in decorative schemes of the period, directs the viewer's eye toward the central figure of Ceres. The composition balances the weight of the goddess with the ethereal quality of the clouds, creating a sense of movement and lightness. This work remains a fine example of the artist's technical skill and his contribution to the development of the Rococo aesthetic in early eighteenth-century France.
