Grace Cossington Smith was a pioneer of Australian Modernism, known for her application of colour and her interest in the changing urban environment of Sydney. In this work, she captures the architectural density of the city centre, focusing on the interplay between light and structure. Cossington Smith uses a palette of ochre, muted yellows, and deep blues to define the mass of the buildings.
