A vintage photochrom print of Castle Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, captured by photographer William Henry Jackson.
This image captures the Castle Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, rendered through the photochrom process. William Henry Jackson, a photographer who documented the American West, utilised this technique to add colour to black and white negatives. The process involved creating multiple lithographic stones, each corresponding to a specific colour, to build the final image.
The composition features the geyser in the middle distance, with a plume of steam rising against a clear sky. In the foreground, a pool of mineral-rich water displays a deep turquoise hue, contrasting with the surrounding sinter deposits. A line of pine trees forms a horizontal band across the centre, separating the geothermal activity from the sky. The colour palette is characteristic of the photochrom era, with soft, slightly muted tones that provide a distinct aesthetic quality compared to modern colour photography.
Jackson was instrumental in the documentation of Yellowstone, and his images were widely distributed by the Detroit Photographic Company. These prints were popular among travellers and collectors at the turn of the twentieth century, offering a view of the American wilderness to those who could not visit in person. The clarity of the geological formations, combined with the artificial colour application, creates a balance between scientific documentation and artistic interpretation. This print provides a record of the park's features as they appeared over a century ago, reflecting the period's fascination with the natural wonders of the United States.
