John Sell Cotman, a member of the Norwich School of painters, produced this etching as part of his architectural studies in Normandy. The work captures the imposing silhouette of the Château de Dieppe, perched upon the cliffside overlooking the town. Cotman travelled to France on three occasions between 1817 and 1820, documenting the medieval and Renaissance structures he encountered. These expeditions resulted in a series of etchings that demonstrate his precise control of line and tone.

The composition relies on a clear separation between the foreground, which remains largely unadorned, and the architectural mass of the castle. Cotman employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the stone walls, the rounded towers, and the rugged cliff face.
