Description
A detailed eighteenth-century etching by François Vivares depicting the town of Castel Gandolfo and the surrounding Italian countryside.
This etching and engraving by François Vivares depicts the town of Castel Gandolfo, situated on the rim of the Alban Hills overlooking Lake Albano. Vivares, a French engraver who spent his career in London, was known for his technical precision in reproducing the works of contemporary painters. This print captures the atmospheric qualities of the Italian countryside, a subject that held great appeal for the British public during the eighteenth century. The composition follows the conventions of the classical topographical tradition. In the foreground, a large, gnarled tree frames the view, providing a sense of scale and depth. Two figures walk along a path, accompanied by a dog, leading the viewer's eye toward the lake and the distant cliffs. The middle ground features the rugged terrain and the calm surface of the water, while the background reveals the town of Castel Gandolfo perched atop the volcanic crater rim. The sky is filled with voluminous clouds, rendered with fine lines to suggest movement and light. Vivares utilised a variety of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to create tonal depth, from the deep shadows beneath the trees to the lighter, more open areas of the sky. The print reflects the interest in the Grand Tour, where travellers sought souvenirs of the sites they visited in Italy. The inclusion of the title and descriptive text at the base of the print follows the standard format for eighteenth-century topographical engravings, providing context for the location and identifying the collection from which the original painting was sourced. This work demonstrates the skill required to translate the painterly effects of light and texture into the medium of printmaking, maintaining clarity while conveying the grandeur of the Roman Campagna.
