A detailed 19th-century lithograph by James Duffield Harding, capturing the mills and natural cascades of Thiers in the Auvergne region of France.
This lithograph by James Duffield Harding depicts the Cascades de Thiers in the Auvergne region of France. Harding, a highly regarded British draughtsman and lithographer, was known for his technical mastery of the medium. He frequently travelled through France and Italy to produce topographical studies for publication. This print, marked as Plate 121, demonstrates his ability to translate the atmospheric qualities of a scene into monochrome tones.
The composition follows a traditional picturesque arrangement. In the foreground, figures in regional dress gather near the riverbank, providing a sense of scale against the rugged terrain. The middle ground features water-powered mills, which were common in the Thiers area, nestled into the rocky gorge. Harding uses varied mark-making to differentiate between the textures of the stone, the foliage, and the rushing water. The background rises into the hills of the Auvergne, rendered with softer, lighter tones to suggest distance and the hazy quality of the air.
Harding was instrumental in popularising lithography as a fine art medium in Britain. His work often appeared in travel albums and instructional drawing books. This particular print reflects the nineteenth-century fascination with European travel and the documentation of regional architecture and natural features. The collaboration with the printer Charles Hullmandel, noted at the bottom of the sheet, ensures the high quality of the tonal gradations. The print captures a specific moment in the industrial and natural history of the region, presenting a balanced view of human activity within a dramatic geological setting. It remains a clear example of the topographical print tradition that flourished during the early Victorian period.
