An intricate eighteenth-century Dutch etching by Jan Caspar Philips, featuring allegorical figures of Faith and Charity surrounding the Ten Commandments.
This etching by Jan Caspar Philips presents a complex allegorical arrangement centred on the Ten Commandments. The central panel depicts two female figures, representing Faith and Charity, seated before the stone tablets of the Law. Faith is identified by the cross she holds, while Charity is shown with children, embodying the nurturing aspect of the virtue. The scene is framed by a decorative cartouche, a hallmark of Dutch printmaking during the eighteenth century, which incorporates architectural elements and scrollwork.
Surrounding the central tableau are six smaller circular vignettes. These secondary scenes illustrate various biblical narratives or moral lessons, providing a narrative context for the central theme of divine law. The composition demonstrates the technical precision typical of Philips, a Dutch engraver known for his contributions to book illustrations and cartographic works. The use of line work to define texture, from the stone tablets to the drapery of the figures, reflects the disciplined approach of the period.
The print functions as a visual sermon, intended to guide the viewer through theological concepts via classical iconography. The symmetry of the design, combined with the ornate borders, creates a balanced visual experience. Philips employs a clear hierarchy of space, ensuring the central message remains the primary focus while the surrounding medallions offer supplementary detail. This work provides insight into the didactic nature of religious art in the Netherlands during the mid-eighteenth century, where print culture played a role in disseminating moral and religious instruction to a wider audience. The print is a fine example of the period's preference for structured, symbolic imagery that rewards careful observation.
