A masterpiece of late nineteenth-century painting, depicting two girls lighting lanterns in a garden at twilight.
John Singer Sargent painted this work in the English village of Broadway, Worcestershire. The scene depicts two young girls, Polly and Dolly Barnard, lighting paper lanterns in a garden at twilight. Sargent observed the specific quality of light during the brief period between sunset and total darkness, which necessitated painting outdoors for only a few minutes each evening to maintain consistency.
The composition features the girls in white dresses, surrounded by a dense arrangement of lilies, carnations, and roses. The lanterns provide a warm, artificial glow that contrasts with the cool, blue tones of the encroaching dusk. Sargent utilised a technique of rapid, precise brushwork to capture the fleeting atmospheric conditions. The painting reflects his interest in the aesthetic concerns of the period, particularly the influence of French Impressionism on his practice.
This work is held in the collection of the Tate in London. It remains a primary example of Sargent's ability to balance formal portraiture with the spontaneous observation of light and colour. The title is derived from the lyrics of a popular song, 'The Wreath', which was often performed by the artist and his friends during their time in the countryside. The painting is notable for its scale and the technical rigour required to complete it over two successive summers.
