Carloway on Lewis looks across a loch from its broken stone broch, with lichen-covered boulders, a grassy slope and scattered islands catching pink and gold evening light in the Hebrides.
Near Carloway, the Iron Age tower of Dun Carloway occupies a rocky mound on Lewis. Probably built around 200 BC, its surviving walls reach nine metres. The exposed structure reveals the form of a broch, with excavation evidence suggesting use into the first millennium AD.
The ruin curves up on the left, its high broken edge descending towards lower stonework on the right. Dark inner openings interrupt the tightly laid masonry. Boulders flecked with pale lichen fill the near grass. Beyond the broch, blue water wraps around low islands beneath a pink-purple sky, with warm evening light catching the rocky mound.
