A detailed seventeenth-century portrait engraving of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo by French artist Jean Morin, after a painting by Philippe de Champaigne.
This portrait of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo is a fine example of the printmaking skill of Jean Morin, a French engraver active in the seventeenth century. Morin is recognised for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of his contemporaries into the medium of etching and engraving. In this work, he reproduces a composition by Philippe de Champaigne, capturing the austere features of the Italian saint in profile.
The subject, Carlo Borromeo (1538-1584), was a significant figure in the Counter-Reformation, serving as the Archbishop of Milan. Morin depicts him with a focus on the sharp, angular contours of his face and the texture of his ecclesiastical vestments. The use of varied line weights creates a sense of volume and depth, particularly in the folds of the fabric and the subtle shading of the skin. The portrait is enclosed within an octagonal frame, a common device in seventeenth-century print portraiture that provides a sense of architectural structure to the composition.
The Latin inscription surrounding the frame identifies the subject and provides his dates of birth and death, adhering to the conventions of commemorative portraiture of the period. Morin employs a sophisticated technique of cross-hatching and stippling to achieve a range of tonal values, moving from the deep shadows of the background to the lighter highlights on the Cardinal's face. This print demonstrates the technical precision required to replicate the nuances of oil painting through the copperplate process. It remains a clear record of both the subject's historical persona and the artistic standards of the French Baroque era.
