A detailed miniature by Jean Fouquet depicting the siege of Jerusalem, rendered with Renaissance precision and architectural depth.
This miniature, attributed to the French master Jean Fouquet, originates from the 'Antiquités judaïques' of Flavius Josephus. Fouquet was a painter of the early Renaissance who worked for the French royal court. His ability to blend Northern European detail with Italianate perspective is evident in this composition.
The scene depicts the siege of Jerusalem by Herod the Great. Fouquet places the action within a contemporary architectural setting, a common practice in fifteenth-century manuscript illumination where historical events were reimagined through the lens of the artist's own time. The central figure of Herod, mounted on a horse and clad in armour, commands the foreground. His presence is contrasted with the architectural structure behind him, which features twisted columns and a fountain, elements that suggest a classical influence.
Fouquet employs a high level of detail in the rendering of the soldiers, their weaponry, and the varied textures of their garments. The composition is structured to guide the eye from the foreground figures towards the mid-ground action, where figures are seen bathing in a fountain, and finally to the background structures. The use of gold leaf and saturated pigments is characteristic of the period, providing a sense of material luxury. The artist demonstrates a keen interest in spatial depth, using the tiled floor and the placement of the figures to create a sense of volume. This work is a fine example of the transition from the Gothic style to the more naturalistic approach of the Renaissance, reflecting the artistic climate of the Loire Valley during the mid-fifteenth century.
