A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Albert Flamen depicting a lobster on a shore, showcasing precise line work and naturalistic observation.
This etching by Albert Flamen, titled 'Cammarus. Le Homard', captures a detailed study of a lobster resting upon a sandy shore. Flamen, a Flemish artist active in Paris during the seventeenth century, produced a significant body of work focused on natural history and aquatic life. His technical approach relies on precise, rhythmic lines to define the segmented shell of the crustacean, contrasting the textured surface of the creature with the smooth, expansive horizon of the sea behind it.
The composition places the lobster in the immediate foreground, allowing the viewer to observe the anatomical details of its claws and antennae. In the distance, small sailing vessels navigate the water, providing a sense of scale and context to the coastal setting. The inclusion of shells scattered on the sand adds to the naturalistic quality of the scene. The work is marked with the inscription 'B. Flamen. fe' and 'Cum priuil. Regis', indicating it was part of a series produced under royal privilege.
Flamen's work reflects the seventeenth-century interest in the classification and observation of the natural world. Rather than creating a dramatic narrative, the artist focuses on the objective representation of his subject. The etching demonstrates a high level of control, using cross-hatching to create depth and shadow across the lobster's carapace. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of scientific curiosity and artistic practice during the Baroque period, where the study of marine life became a subject of aesthetic appreciation in its own right. The monochromatic palette and clean lines make this piece suitable for a variety of interior settings, particularly those with an interest in historical natural history or maritime themes.
