A late fourteenth-century devotional panel by Jean de Beaumetz, featuring a kneeling Carthusian monk before the crucified Christ against a gold-leaf background.
This work by Jean de Beaumetz, a painter active in the service of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, represents a significant example of late fourteenth-century devotional art. Originally commissioned for the Chartreuse de Champmol, the monastery near Dijon, this panel was intended to aid the meditation of the monks within their individual cells. The composition features the crucified Christ at the centre, flanked by the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, and other mourning figures. A Carthusian monk kneels in prayer at the foot of the cross, his white habit providing a stark contrast to the surrounding figures.
The background is notable for its application of gold leaf, which is etched with a delicate, repetitive floral pattern. This decorative treatment flattens the pictorial space, drawing the viewer's attention to the figures and the theological subject matter rather than a realistic setting. The figures themselves exhibit the elongated proportions and graceful, flowing drapery characteristic of the International Gothic style. Their expressions are restrained, conveying a sense of quiet sorrow appropriate for the contemplative purpose of the painting.
Beaumetz was a key figure in the Burgundian court, and his work reflects the sophisticated artistic exchanges occurring between France and the Low Countries during this period. The use of oil paint, still a relatively new medium for panel painting at the time, allows for a subtle rendering of flesh tones and the textures of the garments. This print captures the luminosity of the original gold ground and the precise, linear quality of the painting's execution. It offers a glimpse into the devotional practices of the Carthusian order and the refined aesthetic preferences of the ducal court in Dijon.
