This work by Wen Peng (1498-1573) presents a fine example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy executed on a folding fan. Wen Peng, the eldest son of the celebrated artist Wen Zhengming, was a prominent figure in the cultural circles of Suzhou. He gained recognition for his mastery of various scripts, particularly the cursive style displayed here, which balances technical precision with a fluid, expressive rhythm.
The characters are arranged across the radial surface of the fan, a format that requires the artist to adjust the spacing and scale of the strokes to accommodate the tapering geometry of the paper. The ink sits upon a gold-flecked ground, a material choice that adds a subtle luminosity to the composition. The brushwork exhibits a controlled energy, with varying pressure creating a contrast between thick, weighted strokes and thinner, trailing lines. This variation provides a sense of movement across the page, guiding the eye from right to left in accordance with traditional reading practices.
As a scholar-official, Wen Peng operated within a tradition where calligraphy was considered a primary expression of the artist's character and intellectual cultivation.
