A classicist history painting by Eustache Le Sueur depicting the young Caligula performing funerary rites for his family members.
Eustache Le Sueur, a founding member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, produced this work during the mid-seventeenth century. The painting depicts a scene from Roman history, specifically the moment the young Caligula places the funerary urns of his mother, Agrippina the Elder, and his brother, Nero Caesar, into the family tomb. This subject matter reflects the period's interest in classical antiquity and the moralising tone often found in French history painting of the time.
The composition is structured with a clear focus on the central action. Caligula is seated to the right, dressed in a blue mantle, gesturing towards the tomb. A figure in a pink robe stands centrally, holding an urn, while a youth sits at a table to the left, attending to a small box. The background features military standards and architectural elements that suggest a solemn, public setting. Le Sueur employs a controlled, balanced arrangement of figures, typical of the classicising style influenced by Raphael and Poussin. The palette is composed of distinct, saturated colours, with the blue of Caligula's garment and the pink of the central figure's robe providing a clear visual hierarchy. The lighting is even, allowing for the clear definition of forms and the expression of the figures' restrained emotions. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to organise complex narrative scenes with clarity and formal rigour, adhering to the principles of order and decorum that defined the French academic tradition in the seventeenth century.
