A detailed Ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting a traditional Japanese Yokan cake bowl, showcasing the culinary specialities of the Yatsuhashiya shop in Edo.
This woodblock print by Hokucho Joren captures a specific culinary offering from the Edo period. The composition focuses on a bowl containing Yokan, a traditional Japanese jellied confection made from red bean paste, agar, and sugar. The print functions as a visual advertisement or a record of the specialities produced by the Yatsuhashiya shop, located in the Sagacho district of Fukagawa, Edo.
The artist employs a clean, observational approach to the subject matter. The bowl itself is rendered with subtle shading, while the packaging of the Yokan is depicted with a textured, mottled pattern. A small knife, used for slicing the firm jelly, rests against the side of the bowl, adding a sense of immediate utility to the scene. A delicate floral motif adorns the wrapping, providing a decorative contrast to the utilitarian nature of the food item.
Textual elements are integrated into the upper portion of the print, providing context regarding the shop and the product. These inscriptions were common in Ukiyo-e prints that documented local businesses or famous regional goods. The print reflects the culture of urban consumption in Edo, where shops often commissioned artists to create promotional materials that appealed to the aesthetic sensibilities of the townspeople. The muted colour palette and precise line work are characteristic of the period, prioritising clarity and elegance in the depiction of everyday objects. This work offers a glimpse into the material culture of 19th-century Japan, documenting not only the food itself but also the presentation and branding associated with high-quality confections of the time.
