A 1776 aquatint by Paul Sandby depicting the atmospheric, moonlit silhouette of Caernarvon Castle in North Wales.
Paul Sandby, a founding member of the Royal Academy, produced this aquatint of Caernarvon Castle in 1776. The work demonstrates his technical mastery of the aquatint process, a medium he helped popularise in Britain. The scene depicts the medieval fortress in North Wales under a moonlit sky, with the structure silhouetted against a dark, atmospheric backdrop.
Sandby employs a monochromatic palette to convey the nocturnal setting. The light from the moon reflects across the water, creating a contrast with the deep shadows cast by the castle walls and the surrounding terrain. In the foreground, a figure leads a horse along the bank, providing a sense of scale to the massive stone architecture. The composition balances the architectural precision of the castle with the soft, tonal qualities of the night sky.
This print belongs to a period when British artists were increasingly interested in the picturesque qualities of Welsh ruins. Sandby travelled extensively through Wales, documenting its geography and historic sites. His work provided a visual record for an audience eager to explore the British countryside through art. The print captures the quietude of the scene, focusing on the interplay between natural light and man-made stone. It remains a representative example of eighteenth-century topographical printmaking, where scientific observation meets artistic interpretation. The inclusion of the publication line at the bottom indicates its original circulation as part of a series, intended for collectors of fine prints who valued both historical accuracy and aesthetic composition.
