A precise botanical study of the Cabbage Rose by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, featuring delicate stipple engraving and watercolour detail.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté, often referred to as the Raphael of flowers, produced this study of Rosa centifolia simplex as part of his extensive documentation of the genus Rosa. His work represents a transition in botanical art, moving away from purely scientific diagrams toward a more aesthetic, naturalistic representation of plant life. Redouté utilised the technique of stipple engraving, which allowed for subtle gradations of tone and colour, capturing the delicate texture of the petals and the serrated edges of the foliage. The composition is balanced and clear, set against a neutral background to focus the viewer on the morphology of the specimen. The central bloom is depicted in various stages of development, from tight, protective buds to the fully opened flower, revealing the golden stamens at its centre. The stem, complete with its characteristic thorns, provides a vertical anchor for the composition, while the leaves are rendered with precise attention to their venation and colour variation. Redouté served as the court artist for Empress Joséphine, who commissioned many of his most famous works at her residence, Château de Malmaison. His ability to combine rigorous scientific observation with artistic grace made his prints highly sought after by both botanists and collectors of the period. This particular print demonstrates his mastery of colour printing, where multiple inks were applied to a single plate to achieve the soft, blended hues seen in the petals. The result is a work that remains a standard for botanical accuracy and visual clarity, reflecting the scientific curiosity of the early nineteenth century.
