A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, depicting a classical bust of Plato based on a drawing by Peter Paul Rubens.
This engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I depicts a classical bust of the Greek philosopher Plato. The work is based on a drawing by Peter Paul Rubens, who frequently engaged with antique sculpture to inform his own artistic practice. Vorsterman, a highly skilled engraver who collaborated closely with Rubens, demonstrates his technical mastery through the precise handling of line and shadow.
The composition presents the philosopher in profile, facing left. The artist employs a system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the contours of the face, the texture of the beard, and the voluminous curls of hair. The light source originates from the upper left, casting deep shadows that model the form and provide a sense of three-dimensional volume. The base of the bust is rendered with a stippled effect, suggesting the rough texture of weathered stone, which contrasts with the smooth, refined treatment of the facial features.
At the bottom of the print, the inscription 'PLATO ARISTONIS F. ATHENIENSIS' identifies the subject, while the Latin phrase 'Ex marmore antiquo' indicates that the source material was an ancient marble sculpture. This print reflects the seventeenth-century interest in classical antiquity, where artists sought to document and interpret the aesthetic achievements of the past. Vorsterman's ability to translate the tonal qualities of a drawing into the linear language of engraving is evident here, as he captures the gravity and intellectual presence associated with the philosopher. The work remains a clear example of the collaborative printmaking culture that defined the Flemish Baroque period, where the synergy between painter and engraver allowed for the dissemination of classical imagery to a wider audience.
