A nineteenth-century albumen silver print by George Washington Wilson, depicting the Burns Monument on Calton Hill in Edinburgh.
This albumen silver print by George Washington Wilson captures the Burns Monument on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. Wilson, a Scottish photographer, gained recognition for his technical skill in capturing the topography of the British Isles during the mid-nineteenth century. His work often appeared in travelogues and illustrated books, documenting the architectural and natural features of the region for a Victorian audience.
The composition focuses on the circular, Greek-revival structure of the monument, which commemorates the poet Robert Burns. The surrounding cityscape of Edinburgh unfolds in the background, with the rugged silhouette of Arthur's Seat providing a natural frame. Wilson utilised the wet collodion process, which allowed for the clarity and tonal range visible in this print. The image reflects the period interest in documenting national heritage sites and the romanticisation of Scottish history.
As a commercial photographer, Wilson operated a successful studio in Aberdeen. His images were widely distributed as cartes-de-visite and larger prints, contributing to the popularisation of Scottish tourism. This specific print is presented within the context of a book, showing the integration of photography with printed text, a common format for nineteenth-century travel literature. The print demonstrates the precision of Wilson's lens, capturing the architectural details of the monument against the atmospheric depth of the city and the distant hills. The image remains a record of Edinburgh's urban development and the cultural veneration of Burns during the Victorian era.
