A 1918 oil painting by Charles M. Russell depicting a figure in a traditional buffalo coat, captured with the artist's characteristic attention to historical detail.
Charles M. Russell, often referred to as the Cowboy Artist, produced this work in 1918. The painting depicts a figure standing against a timber wall, wearing a traditional buffalo robe coat. Russell spent much of his life in Montana, observing the daily lives and customs of the indigenous peoples of the American West. His approach to painting prioritised accurate observation of clothing, tools, and environmental conditions.
The composition focuses on the central figure, whose posture is relaxed yet alert. The texture of the buffalo hide is rendered with careful attention to the weight and drape of the material. Behind the subject, the background shows a glimpse of a settlement with log structures and a horse, providing context to the scene. Russell uses a palette of earthy tones, reflecting the dry, sun-bleached environment of the plains. The light source appears to come from the upper left, casting soft shadows that define the folds of the clothing and the vertical lines of the wooden wall.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who romanticised the American West through dramatic action, Russell often chose to document quiet, observational moments. This painting demonstrates his technical ability to capture the material culture of the period. The brushwork remains controlled, allowing for the clear articulation of the subject's features and the specific details of his attire. By documenting these elements, Russell created a visual record of a way of life that was undergoing rapid change during the early twentieth century. The work remains a primary example of his interest in the history and people of the Montana territory, presented with a focus on realism and historical accuracy.
